Gizmo is a 17 month old yorkie who loves his cookies! He also loves to hide his cookies but before he manages to find the perfect place to stash his treat, the cookie has melted in his mouth! Gizmo is from Waco, Texas and his Mom Judy says he also loves paper, so much so that she has had to explain to her students that the dog really did eat their homework.
Gizmo also considers it a duty to be on cat patrol in their yard and he keeps a watchful eye on the surroundings from the window. He also has the ability to cheer his Mom up no matter what kind of a day she has had.
Barack Obama has promised his daughters a dog once the presidential campaign is over.
There is an internet petition encouraging the Obama’s to rescue a dog from the million of dogs awaiting a home in shelters across the country. We think this is a great initiative; you can help by visiting Petition to Urge the Obama Family to Adopt Their New Dog and adding your name to the almost 40,000 signatures!
Anything that highlights the plight of the homeless dogs in this county deserves our attention and we hope you will take a few minutes to add your name to the petition. Whether or not the Obama’s decide to adopt a homeless dog or purchase a puppy from a reputable breeder, the fact that the petition exists will shine a light on the issue and at least make the Obamas aware of the causes we support.
We freely admit that we have dog birthday parties! The dogs love it and they each have a chance to be the center of attention and being pampered and fussed over.
Max is a King Charles Cavalier Spaniel who is one of our rescue dogs. He has the most gentle loving nature and a tail that never stops wagging. He puts up with the yorkies here and would probably be quite crushed if we told him that he is not a yorkie as he idolizes his big brother yorkie Bailey.
Max turned three on July 5Th, a bright sunny day which allowed us to take the party outside to the pool. His most favorite toy is his Hide A Squirrel, which he absolutely loves but refuses to agree to give them back once you throw them to him. Instead, he takes them and runs underneath the deck and hides them. Once he has all three, I have to go crawl underneath the deck to retrieve them! We also played with our agility tunnel, which Max and Paris excel at, but the yorkies are not too crazy about. The concept of working for treats is not one that sets well with the yorkies!
We made individual peanut butter pup cakes for each, frosted and decorated with yogurt bone decorations. Our smallest yorkie took the whole pup cake and went off running to hide it for her late night snack! If you don’t have the time or inclination to bake from scratch, I used the PupCake Mix by Petit Four Legs which is a wheat and corn free complete packaged pre-mix that you just add oil and eggs to. They each took their turn sitting on the table and eating their pup cakes and a good time was had by all! We finished off the day with them taking a dip in the pool which cooled them off from the hot 90 degree weather that day.
Dog parties can be elaborate or simple but the most important thing is to have fun with your dogs!
Several months ago, I met Carla Genender on My Dog Space. We have yorkies in common. As I surfed around her page, I discovered that she was a published author.Out of curiosity, I went to Amazon and looked up her book, Dog Sense.I ordered it, after all, its nice to support your friends and acquaintances.
What a fun entertaining book. The name of the book “Dog Sense – 99 relationship tips from your canine companion” gives you a good feel for what the book is about. It is a collection of photographs and brief stories about 99 different dogs with tips on how to improve our relationships with humans.
The photographs are beautiful and were taken by Amy Hill and the introduction in the book is by Marty Becker, D.M.V. and Coauthor of Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover’s Soul.
Some of the dogs featured are rescues from shelters in Florida, from places such as Palm Beach. Some are purebreds, some are “designer” dogs, some are therapy dogs and some are mutts, but they are all beautiful in their own way. Each page features a different dog, a relationship tip and a photograph of the dog.
Rascal, a Papillion, reminds us to remember to celebrate important occasions. I took that to heart and managed to fit into our busy July 4th weekend a birthday party for our rescue Max, a King Charles Cavalier Spaniel. Kiley, a Fox Terrier, has a tip for canines, “Enjoy it if he spoils you, but don’t act spoiled”. There are 97 other dogs, pictures and relationship tips for an enjoyable after read. We guarantee you will come away smiling.
